Bourne Valley youth inspired by the Greenway!

Pro Loco Art competitions are Italian in origin; a literal translation of "pro loco" is "for the place".

There's a long tradition of Art Pro Loco competitions in Poole, with creative people taking several weeks to paint, photograph or write about a particular locality; work is then brought together in an exhibition later in the year.  Past Poole Pro Loco projects have centred on The Quay, Brownsea Island, Hamworthy, Parkstone, Poole Park, Upton Park and even Tower Park.

In 2004 Poole Arts Council and the Poole and East Dorset Arts Society celebrated the new Bourne Valley Greenway which offers a huge variety of opportunities for artistic interpretation; formal English Heritage Grade II* listed gardens and natural heathland, created wetlands and reedbeds, wildlife and ornamental ponds, and industrial architecture.

Participants worked on their pieces over the summer.  An exhibition followed, entitled "This is Your Backyard", held at the Peacock Gallery, Upton Park between 11th September and 3rd October.  1st Prize in the painting/3D art category went to Bourne Valley Youth Centre who produced an amazing mosaic dragonfly to adorn the wall of their new garden.

The dragonfly and a few other examples of the works are shown above.
