Appendix 1.  Text of the original letter sent by the Use Water Wisely project.

Dear Customer

Bourne Stream Partnership - "Use Water Wisely Don't Drain the Rivers"

We want you to help save us water

You may feel that we have plenty of water in the UK but did you know that high population means there is less water available per person in this country than in Ethiopia?  For example, in Bournemouth, on a summer's day the water we use would fill the IMAX building two and a half times.

We can help you to save money

The Bourne Stream Partnership is a group of local public and private organisations.  Our aim is to bring improvements to the Bourne Valley.  Please see the enclosed leaflet for more information about the Partnership.  Because water conservation in the home brings important benefits to our waterways and the surrounding environment, the Bourne Stream Partnership is pleased to make a range of special offers to those living close to the stream.

We are offering all this free to the first 150 who take up the offer:

  1. Save-a-flush bags for installing in toilet cisterns to save water;

  2. A water butt supplied and fitted;

  3. A hose trigger gun or a shower timer;

  4. A water efficiency audit of your property;

  5. An audit on your sewers determining whether your rainwater goes to soakaways or not, which could result in a rebate on your sewerage bill;

  6. An assessment on whether you can save money by having a meter installed.

To take up this offer and be one of the lucky 150, or just to find out more about how you can save water and money, telephone 01202 590059 between 9:00am and 5:00pm.  All who contact us will also be entered into a prize draw for £25.00 worth of B&Q vouchers.

Yours Faithfully

Chairman of Bourne Stream Partnership

Appendix 2.  Questionnaire.

Good morning/afternoon. My name is ……..  and this is……….. We are students at Bournemouth University. We are currently undertaking a research study in your area on behalf of the Bourne Stream Partnership, and wondered if you would mind answering a few quick questions. The questionnaire should only take about two minutes to complete.

Bournemouth and West Hampshire Water sent you a letter in the last year with a genuine offer of a variety of free water saving measures, such as fitted water butts, and providing trigger guns for hoses. Unexpectedly, there was a much lower response rate than anticipated. We are trying to find out why there was such a low response rate, and what could be done differently in the future to make the project more successful.

Q1. Do you remember receiving this letter from Bournemouth and West Hampshire Water? (Show a copy of the letter) If yes go to Q2, if no go to Q3.

Q2.  What was your reason for not taking up the offer?

Q3. How would you prefer to be informed of these genuine offers, if there was a similar project in the future?

Q4. Do you think that using these water saving measures would have a noticeably positive effect on the environment?   Why?

Q5. Do you recycle?  If yes, Why?    If no, go to Q7.

Q6. What do you recycle?

Q7. Do you already have some form of water saving device in your home or Garden? What?  If yes, go to Q8. If no go to Q9.

Q8. What is your main motivation for using water saving devices?

Q9. Have you every heard of the Bourne Stream Partnership?

Q10. Can you indicate where the Bourne Stream runs through this map? (show map)

Q11. How could your attention be grabbed by any future campaign?

Q12. Would you like to be informed of any similar project, which may arise in the future?

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer our questions, the information gained will be very helpful.
